Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) today announced it has received a $1 million general support grant from The Ford Foundation.
The Ford Foundation grant will fund the DTH School and Dancing Through Barriers(R), its education and community outreach program. Over the next four years, the DTH School will develop and implement a strategic recruitment plan, augment its curriculum to offer more robust training and artistic experiences including guest faculty and choreographers for its students. It will also formulate a comprehensive K-12 curriculum for use in rendering its education activities and residencies in New York City and around the world.
"The Ford Foundation played a significant role in the founding of DTH 37 years ago," said DTH Founder and Artistic Director Arthur Mitchell. "We are honored by their continued recognition of the importance and relevance of DTH's mission, especially during today's turbulent times."
Founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook, Dance Theatre of Harlem's mission is to create and present the best in classical and neo- classical dance; actively promote the arts and make them widely accessible to new and existing audiences; and provide a multicultural environment where young people and adults of diverse backgrounds have opportunities for exploration, achievement, and enhanced self-esteem through educational programs and professional training in classical ballet and the allied arts.
"We are exceedingly grateful to The Ford Foundation for its generous gift at this time," said DTH Executive Director Laveen Naidu. "Not only will it enable DTH to offer more opportunities to young people, this four-year commitment of one million dollars provides a strong foundation as we build into the future and anticipate the return of our professional company."
