Traditionally, grants for women were designed for battered women, homeless women, and single parent moms. However, there is a growing number of grant opportunities for women who are interested in starting or expanding a business.
Why is this happening? Well, recent U.S. Census reports have revealed that more and more small businesess are owned by women. In addition, statistics have revealed that women are more likely to succeed in business, than their male counterparts.
Here are three interesting facts as reported by the Small Business Administration:
1) Between 1997 and 2002, the numbers of women-owned firms overall increased by 19.8 percent and of women-owned employer firms, by 8.3 percent.
2) Firms owned by women increased employment by 70,000, and those owned by men lost 1 million employees between 1997 and 2002.
3) The 7,240 women-owned firms with 100 employees or more accounted for $275 billion in gross receipts or 34.2 percent of the total receipts of women-owned employer firms in 2002.
Several companies are publishing extensive listings of grant opportunities for women. One that has received rave reviews is the 2007 Grants For Women and Girls directory available in e-book format.
The e-book lists tons of grant opportunities for women from private foundations, federal programs, and state programs.
Focusing on personal grants, business grants, education grants, and healthcare grants, the guide also offers useful tips on how to write and apply for grants.
